It’s that time of year again; we are now fully immersed in trade show season with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas the curtain raiser of a month that will see members of our industry travel the world in search of the products and trends by which our businesses will thrive in 2015 and beyond.
One product that attracted my attention is the Sleep Number SleepIQ Kids Bed: alerting parents when a child gets out of bed, and allowing for remote access to lights amongst other features. There’s no doubt that tech continues to grow in stature in our space – a year is a long time in technology and nowhere is this change more seismic than in the toys and games sector. News outlets report from CES on how far 3D printing, virtual reality, wearables and health tech has come in the past 12 months – and we can expect these developments to filter down into the toy space. Take wearable technology: if you’d have told kids 12 months ago that they’d be wearing their own smartwatches well before Apple launched their device, and parents that such a device would cost under £30, collectively they’d have bitten your hand off. So 3D printers and virtual reality headsets for kids by Christmas? Don’t discount it entirely.
Not until you have visited the various global Toy Fairs, that is. Team members from Generation Media head out to China for the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair next week and we will be making the short journey to Kensington Olympia for the UK Toy Fair on January 20th-22nd, before we hop over to Germany for Spielwaremesse (AKA the Nuremberg Toy Fair) beginning on the 28th January. Here we’ll be hoping to learn more about the toys that will be on every child’s wishlist come Christmas 2015. I have no doubt that there will be a strong ‘smart toy’ presence – although brands such as Lego have proved time and time again that traditional toys still have their place in the toybox.
