Generation Media review the latest Disney release The Lion King and how it marks another positive result for the year of the family film across the UK cinema market.
Anyone who has read a Facebook timeline this year will have no doubt seen many a friend or family member booking in time at their local cinema to tune into one of the latest film releases this year.
A common feature amongst the cinema listings has been the sheer volume of family film releases including The LEGO Movie 2, Dumbo, Aladdin and Toy Story 4 highlighted as the greatest trilogy in cinema history…before it became a ‘quadrilogy’ of course.
Despite Toy Story 4 only being released on Friday 21st June marking a month since its launch in the UK market it has amassed a cumulative total of £42,598,992. To put this into perspective across the year to date, 6 of the Top 10 Box Office films have been family focused with Toy Story 4 taking the No.2 spot behind Avengers: Endgame.
However, Woody and Buzz may struggle to retain their ranking following Friday’s release of the eagerly anticipated CGI and live action re-imagining of Disney’s The Lion King.
From the latest opening weekend data it has already been claimed a ‘roaring success’ dominating the box office and becoming the ‘most successful first three days of any Disney remake’.
The movie collected an estimated global total of £346,000,000 beating other Disney remakes including Beauty and the Beast and knocking Avatar from the top spot.
No doubt the built-up discussion and excitement around the film has helped to achieve their Box Office sum, but cinema continues to be a much-loved form of entertainment for the whole family.
With total weekly admissions sitting at around 2,700,000 per week on average, there is an audience sitting in a trusted environment waiting to be tapped into by brands.
So, with films such as Frozen 2, Shaun the Sheep, Angry Birds, Addams Family and Spies in Disguise all on the horizon for this year alone it is a great time to capture those ever in demand audiences.
