Generation Media attends CineEurope
Cine Europe 2019 took place last week in the fabulous city of Barcelona. The convention is the biggest of its kind in Europe and attracts professionals from around the world.
I had my first taste for cinema distribution in 2017, working with Vue on a series of successful PAW Patrol event cinema releases. The combined reach for those was an astonishing 6.5M and a box office performance of circa £700K: it made me realise how powerful event cinema can be to promote your brand in a quality environment and to an engaged audience. And all this whilst adding an additional line to your revenue mix. Does it get any better than this?!
So fast forward to 2019, I decided to attend Cine Europe to deepen mine, and Generation Media’s relationship with the big screen.
As a relative newcomer to the cinema distribution business, I was expecting to be overwhelmed with an armoury of information. In reality the format was exceptionally well curated by Laura Houlgatte Abbot and Andrew Sunshine, providing a highly engaging blend of work-to-learn, networking and idea sharing with like-minded professionals.
From a “traditional” content perspective, Cine Europe offered studio presentations from the top European and U.S. players: UniFrance, Studiocanal, Warner Bros., Picture International, Universal Pictures, STX, Sony, Disney Studios and Paramount.
These sessions not only offered a comprehensive overview of releases coming up in the next months but provided a clear indication of how 2019/2020 is likely to be another record-breaking season for cinema.
As our agency’s distribution services are mainly focused on alternative content, the “main event” of the week had to be the Event Cinema Association product state presentation.
ECA’s new incredible MD Grainne Peat and a stellar board of directors put together the first product slate to be presented, at Cine Europe to a full house in the main auditorium. It was a highly engaging and powerful session which showcased the diversity, breadth and cultural value of event cinema.
There is a huge appetite for alternative content to be experienced on the big screen ranging from ballet and opera to preschool features and it is clearly destined to grow.
As an agency, we are currently working with our clients on a number of family releases to capitalise on this platform and include this incredible touch point to their franchise strategy.
Event Cinema has made all this possible and we are looking forward to seeing bigger, better, and more content on the big screen. Generation Media is excited to be part of all this.
