GM Thought Of The Week: ITV’s Reality TV – A Winning Formula
I’m A Celebrity launched on Sunday and boasted ITV’s largest overnight ratings of the whole of 2017 to date, pulling in 9.8m adults and peaking at 10.9m. This is a victory for ITV, which has recently fallen largely behind in the ratings battle with the BBC; with peak viewings for Blue Planet and Strictly exceeding the 10m mark over the past month.
While I’m not a fan of I’m A Celebrity myself (though partial to tuning into the witchetty grub eating episode), I can’t deny that ITV seem to have the magic formula when it comes to reality TV. Love Island was the biggest show of the year so far on ITV2, and TOWIE is now on its 21st series.
Some may call it chewing gum for the brain (yes, I recently heard someone referring to it as such) and as a result these shows do often get a tough time. There’s no doubting though that the nation’s love for being the fly on the wall and watching normal (or not so normal) people in situations different from our own still proves to be a fascinating concept.
